Located on Marshalls Road in Egmore, Chennai,
Rajarathinam Stadium is a prominent multipurpose sports facility owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu Police Department. Originally established as a police parade ground in 1957, the stadium gained historic significance when its track was “blessed” by three Olympic legends: Jesse Owens, Bob Richards, and Bob Mathias. Following major renovations completed in 2013, the facility now features a 400-meter nine-lane running track, a 1,200-seat gallery, and specialized courts for sports like volleyball. While it remains a central venue for official police parades and recruitment drives, the stadium is also a popular site for school sports meets, cultural festivals like Chennai Sangamam, and local residents who use it for morning walks. Ongoing modernization efforts as of 2026 include plans for a high-tech synthetic athletics track to alleviate pressure on other major city stadiums.
